Discussion Question Unit 5 Question 1 Aldelfer ERG theory of motivation theory follows the hierarchical structure similar to Abraham Maslow’s theory of motivation (Reis & Geller, 2010). I learnt that the theory asserts that the motivation of human beings depends on the needs.
There are different needs such as existence, relatedness, and growth. I support that existence needs are the most basic and relate to the ability of the individual to survive. These needs apply in any area.
Relatedness refers to the interaction. Human beings are social by nature. Consequently, they are bound to assume course of action that are in line with the social code. In education, relatedness can apply when one needs to fit in a certain category.
For instance, I can study certain prowess in education since doing so increases the chances. The growth needs are the highest. I need to grow for the sake of it not that it supports their existence.
These motivators come after the lower needs have been satisfied. Question 2 I understand that self-directed learning is becoming a vital skill in the modern world owing to the increment technology.
Most of the individuals that want to develop have to seek the skills at their own time (Blaschke, 2012). Organizations may have training program, managers often recognize effort among employees. I believe when the employee assumes the initiative and seeks knowledge in a given field, he or she is better suited for a position as opposed to the ones that wait for the organization wide training.
The organization wide training is not capable of meeting the needs of the workplace (Raemdonck, Gijbels & Groen, 2013). I understand that dynamism of the workplace may lead to the rapid variation of the required skills as opposed to the training curriculum.
Any content that is not covered in the normal training program has to be sought in the private time of the employee (Guglielmino & Toffler, 2013). Consequently, self-directed learning is becoming a mandatory skill in the modern workplace.
Self-directed learning calls for the input of the other people. In as much as the individual is seeking new knowledge from the sources at his or her accord. Question 3 I think that self-directed learning ought to be supported by the human resource department.
While the human resource department may be instrumental in the development of the skills in the organization, the human resource department can come up with an incentive program aimed at the increment of the self-directed learning (Littlejohn, Milligan, & Margaryan, 2012).
Self-directed learning can be improved through the change of management styles such that there is more experiential learning, creation of systems for communication and teamwork in the organization can also increase the chances of the employees assuming more effective self-directed learning.
I feel the organization also ought to increase the chances of self-directed learning through accommodation of all workers that would be interested in learning in the working environment. Participative leadership can also be used as the main way of increasing learning in the working environment.
For instance, the lower cadre employees ought to be given the opportunity during the discussion. Question 4 According to me, the approach to fixing the faucet was satisfactory. The need to achieve the functioning faucet was the main motivator for the action.
I think the learning experience was spurred by the increased success in the other do it yourself projects. The project was also spurred by the nature of the problem. The ability to have a fully functional faucet is linked to the existence needs.
I strongly support that faucet’s location and importance also increased the desire to have a permanent and fully functional water point since this facility determines the ability to operate the kitchen effectively.
The need to learn on the job coupled by the desire to save some money led to the project. However, the initiative should have taken a considerably shorter time. Experimentation with short term fixes such as attachment of the duct tape could have contributed to better functioning of the faucet during the lag period.
